Some experts is doing experiments around google adsense for the past few weeks, based on the recommendation of the RN and it looks like the change has had a positive effect on CPM of the ad unit where the actual changes were applied.

Experiment in brief:

An owner has 300*250 unit of ad in the side bar of the website, which is placed above the fold, and it serves both images (rich text) and text ads. This ad unit is enabled for placement targeting so an advertiser can easily target his ads for display campaigns through AdSense.

To get higher CPM ads the owner, which was doing the experiment, has created the simple rule that blocked Google ads from showing up unless their CPM was.6$ or above 20% more than its value and if the CPM will be lower the current in house ads will displayed to the visitor instead of the Adsense Ad,

This experiment has been done about 8 weeks and now it can be said that this experiment really helps in pushing up the CPM is because now google ads are in the competition with the external ads in order to show up on the site and thus it raises its own CPM to outbid your in-house Ad.

The advantages of this experiments also helps in removing the low paying display ads and you can use that space for the older content of your website to the new visitors who have missed those stories.
